The challenge

What wasn't working

South African learners choose subjects and study paths with very little guidance. Existing career sites are dense government-style directories: long forms, unfamiliar language, and no sense of what a career actually looks like day to day.

The goal

What had to change

Build a warm, encouraging platform where a learner can answer a handful of questions in under three minutes and walk away with real, locally relevant study paths.

Design process

The decisions that shaped the interface.

  1. 01

Replaced the long questionnaire with five large, friendly question cards and plain everyday language.

  2. 02

Built a warm orange brand system on soft cream surfaces, deliberately unlike the cold institutional look of existing portals.

  3. 03

Mapped every result to real South African options: universities, universities of technology, TVET colleges, apprenticeships and learnerships.

  4. 04

Designed a separate entry point for parents and teachers so learners keep a space of their own.

Development

React and Tailwind CSS with a typed content layer for careers, subjects and bursaries, so new career families can be added without touching interface code. Everything is mobile-first; most learners arrive on a phone, often on limited data.

The solution

A career discovery experience that never tells a learner what to become. It asks a few honest questions, then shows possibilities worth exploring, with the study paths and bursaries attached to each one.

Key learnings

Tone is a product feature. The same information framed as encouragement rather than assessment changed how long learners were willing to stay.
